The SA-8 Gecko is a highly mobile, low-altitude, short-range SAM system. With a maximum range of 5.7nm and an effective ceiling height of 19,700 feet, it falls within most of the A-10's performance envelope and represents a serious threat. When engaging a SA-8 it is best to either fly above its ceiling or mask behind terrain before using a standoff weapon. The SA-8 utilizes a radar system for target acquisition, and command guidance for missile tracking.
