Overview

RUK (Range Unknown) is a defensive mode also known as TOO (Target of Opportunity) mode. In this mode the HARM initially flies toward the currently selected STPT however the HARM seeker is activated shortly after launch and it will correct its flight path to strike a threat regardless of its location in relation to the STPT. For this mode it is best to turn toward the target before firing. It is accessed just like any other POS mode, either by pressing OSB#3 or the Pinky Switch.

  • Advantages of POS RUK
    • Threat specific
    • Capable of complete HOTAS control
    • Can be used to quickly fire a HARM in self-defense
  • Disadvantages of POS RUK
    • Cannot tell threat status (active, inactive, tracking/firing)
    • No Time to Target/Time of Flight/Time Until Impact information

Designating a Target

Designating a target is done in the same manner as POS EOM mode. In RUK mode the HARM can be launched on a target at the currently selected STPT, or it can be launched on any threat at any location if you were to find yourself in self-defense situation such as a SAM ambush. When launching at threats not at the STPT location, it is best to maneuver the aicraft so that the threat is within 20° or so of the nose so that the HARM can detect the handed off threat after launch.
